Center for the Arts Studios at the Promenade in conjunction with Art in Public Places allows Center for the Arts Member artists — painters, sculptors, photographers and glass artists — to regularly display their work in various storefront locations at the center of the Promenade at Bonita Bay. Artists Studios are open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and feature demonstrations in each of the studio spaces. New exhibitions, and artists, occupy the studios every 30 to 60 days. The last Thursday of each month kicks off a new group of artists and exhibitions in an evening Studio Walk, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., accompanied by musical entertainment. 16th annual Mardi Gras-Goodland Boat Parade, benefiting Avow Hospice - Saturday, February 18, 2012

Join the fun at the 16th annual Mardi Gras-Goodland boat parade!

This year’s theme is the world of dance. Pick an idea that relates to popular dances from the past and present or folk dances in the US and around the world--anything from the Bristol Stomp to the Moulin Rouge Can Can--and decorate your crew and boat to depict it. Boats of all sizes and shapes are welcome. Extravagance is not required and the emphasis is on fun. 

Each of the Goodland restaurants will offer food specials. There will also be live music and special events at various island hot spots. Spectators are welcome to picnic and watch the parade from the new Goodland boat park where volunteers will be selling hot dogs and soda. The boat ramp at the boat park will not be open to boaters so there will be ample space for parking. Those coming by boat will be able to dock, dine and watch the festivities at Stan’s, the Little Bar, The Old Marco Lodge or the Marker 8 restaurant. To view the parade by boat, anchor as close to the mangroves as possible between the Goodland bridge and marker R10.

Grand Marshal Stan Gober will lead the parade, which starts at 2 p.m. at marker G15 near Moran’s Barge Marina. The boats will take a turn through the Goodland Harbor (now officially designated Buzzard’s Bay South) and then circumnavigate the island ending at the boat park.

Proceeds will be donated to Avow Hospice, to support services provided to Marco Island.

Olé Art & Jazz Festival - At the Olé Village at Lely Resorts - February 18-19, 2012

Sir Elton John is undeniably one of the biggest pop stars of all time. His seemingly effortless musical skill and flamboyant style propelled him to superstardom in the '70s, and he has managed to retain his overwhelming popularity--producing top 40 singles yearly from 1970 to 1996. Somewhat of a piano prodigy, John started playing at four and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 11. After six years of formal training, he left the Academy to write and perform popular music. During the 1970's John, along with lyricist Bernie Taupin, produced a remarkable amount of material. The '70s was John's golden decade, during which he yielded such unforgettable classics as "Your Song," "Rocket Man," "Tiny Dancer," "Daniel," "Crocodile Rock," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Benny and the Jets," "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word." The '80s also saw the release of major hits including "Little Jeannie," "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues," "I'm Still Standing," "Sad Songs Say So Much," and "Candle in the Wind." In the '90s, songs such as "Sacrifice," and "Blessed," and "The One" hit the top 10 on the US charts, and his collaboration (in 1994) with lyricist Tim Rice on Disney's massively successful The Lion King produced the instant classics "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"--the latter winning an Oscar for Best Original Song. The collaboration was so successful, the pair were recruited once again by Disney to write the music for their Broadway musical adaptation of the classic opera Aida--an album of this effort was released in 1999. The critical and commercial success of John's 2004 release, Peachtree Road, further solidifies his position as one of the most successful and enduring artists in pop music history.
